About Our Hair Color Services

Hair color has the extraordinary power to transform your entire look, boost your confidence, and express your personal style in a way that few other beauty services can match. At Studio 360 Salon in Chatham Township, New Jersey, our colorists bring a deep understanding of color theory, formulation chemistry, and the art of customizing shades to complement each client’s unique skin tone, eye color, and natural base. Whether you are covering gray for a seamless, natural result, deepening your shade for fall, going lighter for summer, or correcting a color mishap from another salon, we have the expertise and the premium products to deliver beautiful, healthy, vibrant color every time.

Our single-process color service is ideal for clients who want all-over coverage, a subtle shade shift, or complete gray coverage in one step. We mix custom formulations using professional-grade color lines to achieve a result that looks natural, rich, and multidimensional rather than flat. For clients whose desired shade requires lifting and then toning, our double-process color service provides the dramatic transformation needed to go from dark to light, achieve a platinum blonde, or create a vivid fashion shade from a darker starting point.

Root touch-ups, also known as hairline touch-ups, are one of our most popular services for clients who want to maintain their color between full applications. This efficient service targets new growth along the hairline, part, and crown, blending regrowth seamlessly with your existing color so that your shade always looks freshly done. We recommend scheduling root touch-ups every four to six weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows and the contrast between your natural shade and your colored shade.

Our gloss and toner services are the finishing touch that takes good color and makes it exceptional. A gloss adds shine, depth, and richness to any shade, while a toner can neutralize unwanted brassiness, cool down warm tones, or add a subtle shift in hue. These services are also excellent as standalone refreshers between full color appointments, reviving vibrancy and sealing the cuticle for healthier-looking hair. For clients dealing with color correction, our experienced colorists carefully assess the current state of your hair, develop a corrective plan, and work patiently over one or multiple sessions to achieve your desired result without compromising hair integrity.

What to Expect During Your Color Appointment

Step 1: Color Consultation. Your appointment begins with a detailed consultation where your colorist examines your natural hair color, discusses your desired outcome, reviews your color history, and assesses the current health of your hair. This step is critical for selecting the right formulation and technique.

Step 2: Custom Formulation. Based on your consultation, your colorist will mix a completely custom color formula designed specifically for you. No two clients receive the same formula—every shade is tailored to your unique base, desired result, and hair condition.

Step 3: Application. Your colorist will apply color using the appropriate technique for your service, whether that is a full single-process application, a targeted root touch-up, or a multi-step double process. Processing time varies depending on the service and your hair type.

Step 4: Processing & Monitoring. While your color processes, your colorist will periodically check development to ensure the shade is reaching its optimal level. Timing is adjusted based on how your hair is responding, and your colorist will ensure your comfort throughout the process.

Step 5: Rinse, Tone & Finish. Once processing is complete, your color is rinsed with care. If your service includes a gloss or toner, it is applied at this stage for maximum vibrancy and shine. Your hair is then conditioned, dried, and styled so you can see your new color in its best light.

Hair Color FAQs

How often should I touch up my roots?

Most clients schedule root touch-ups every four to six weeks, though this can vary depending on how quickly your hair grows and the contrast between your natural color and your chosen shade. Clients with a significant contrast, such as gray hair with dark brown color, may need more frequent touch-ups.

Will hair color damage my hair?

Professional hair color applied by a trained colorist is far gentler than box color from the drugstore. We use high-quality formulations with built-in conditioning agents, and we carefully monitor processing times to minimize damage. We also recommend regular conditioning treatments to keep colored hair healthy and strong.

What is the difference between single process and double process?

Single-process color achieves your desired shade in one step, either depositing color, covering gray, or slightly lightening your natural shade. Double-process color involves two steps, typically a lightening or bleaching step followed by a toning step, and is necessary for more dramatic lightening results such as going from dark brown to platinum blonde.

Can I color my hair if it is already chemically treated?

In many cases, yes, but this requires a careful assessment by your colorist. During your consultation, we will evaluate the condition of your hair, discuss your treatment history, and determine whether it is safe to proceed with color. In some situations, we may recommend a conditioning or repair treatment before coloring.

What is a gloss or toner?

A gloss is a semi-permanent color treatment that adds shine, depth, and subtle color enhancement without lifting your natural shade. A toner is used to adjust the tone of lightened hair, neutralizing brassiness or adding a specific hue. Both are excellent for refreshing color between full appointments.

How long does hair color last?

Permanent color typically lasts until it grows out, though the vibrancy may gradually fade with washing and sun exposure. Semi-permanent and demi-permanent options fade more gradually over six to twelve washes. Using color-safe shampoo and conditioner significantly extends the life and vibrancy of your color.

What is color correction?

Color correction is a specialized service designed to fix undesirable color results, such as banding, uneven tones, brassy highlights, or an overall shade that does not match what you wanted. It often requires multiple sessions and is priced based on the complexity of the correction. A consultation is required before booking this service.

Should I come with clean or dirty hair for color?

For most color services, it is fine to arrive with hair that has not been washed for a day or two, as the natural oils on your scalp can provide a slight barrier and improve comfort during application. However, avoid heavy product buildup. Your colorist will provide specific guidance when you book.

Can you match a specific color I saw on social media?

We love when clients bring inspiration photos! While results can vary based on your starting shade and hair condition, our colorists are skilled at analyzing reference images and creating formulations that capture the essence of your desired look. During your consultation, we will give you an honest assessment of what is achievable for your hair.

Aftercare Tips for Color-Treated Hair

Protecting your color investment is essential for long-lasting vibrancy and healthy hair. Here are our top aftercare recommendations:

  • Wait 48 hours after coloring before shampooing to allow the color to fully set and the cuticle to close.
  • Use sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. Sulfates strip color and can cause premature fading.
  • Wash with lukewarm or cool water. Hot water opens the cuticle and accelerates color loss.
  • Minimize heat styling and always use a heat protectant when blow-drying or using hot tools.
  • Protect your hair from sun exposure. UV rays can fade and alter hair color, so wear a hat or use UV-protective hair products when spending time outdoors.
  • Schedule regular gloss treatments between full color appointments to refresh vibrancy and add shine.
  • Use a weekly deep conditioning mask to keep colored hair hydrated, soft, and resistant to breakage.
