About Our Highlight & Lowlight Services

Highlights and lowlights are among the most transformative and versatile color services available, offering the ability to add brightness, depth, dimension, and movement to any hair color. At Studio 360 Salon in Chatham Township, New Jersey, our colorists are experts in the art of foiling, using a variety of techniques to create everything from subtle, natural-looking dimension to bold, high-contrast brightness. Whether you want to lighten your overall look, add warmth to a cool base, create a multi-tonal effect that catches the light from every angle, or simply add a few face-framing highlights to brighten your complexion, our team has the skill and creativity to deliver exceptional results.

Full highlights involve placing foils throughout the entire head, lifting every section to create an all-over lightened effect. This technique is ideal for clients who want maximum brightness and an overall lighter look without committing to a single-process blonde. The density and placement of the foils can be adjusted to create anything from a soft, natural blonde to a bright, platinum-level result. Partial highlights, on the other hand, focus on the top layers of the hair, the crown, and the face-framing sections, adding brightness and dimension where it is most visible while leaving the underneath layers darker for depth and contrast.

Babylights are an ultra-fine, delicate highlighting technique that creates a very subtle, naturally sun-kissed effect. Using very thin sections of hair in the foils, our colorists can replicate the kind of natural highlighting that children often have from spending time outdoors. The result is soft, luminous, and incredibly natural-looking—perfect for clients who want a barely-there enhancement that adds shimmer and dimension without an obvious highlighted look. Babylights are especially beautiful on blondes and light brunettes, though they can be adapted for darker hair as well.

Lowlights are the complement to highlights, adding darker strands throughout lighter hair to create depth, richness, and dimension. They are an excellent option for clients who have been highlighted over time and feel their color has become too one-dimensional or washed out. Lowlights restore the natural tonal variation that makes hair look healthy, thick, and multi-faceted. Our colorists often combine highlights and lowlights in a single session to create a truly dimensional, multi-tonal effect that is rich, complex, and uniquely flattering.

What to Expect During Your Highlight Appointment

Step 1: Consultation. Your colorist will begin with a detailed discussion about your goals, examining your current color, natural base, and hair condition. Together, you will decide on the type of highlights (full, partial, babylights, or a combination), the desired tone (warm, cool, or neutral), and the overall density and placement strategy.

Step 2: Sectioning & Foiling. Your colorist will methodically section your hair and apply lightener to individual strands using foils. Each foil is placed with precision to ensure even, consistent results. The size and spacing of the foils determine the final look—thinner, tighter foils for a more natural effect and thicker, more saturated foils for bolder brightness.

Step 3: Processing & Monitoring. Once all foils are in place, the lightener processes under carefully controlled conditions. Your colorist will monitor the development, checking foils periodically to ensure consistent lifting and optimal results. Processing time varies based on your starting level and desired result.

Step 4: Rinse & Toning. When the desired level of lift is achieved, the foils are removed and your hair is thoroughly rinsed. A custom toner or gloss is then applied to neutralize any unwanted warmth, refine the tone, and add a beautiful, polished finish. Toning is an essential step that transforms raw lift into a cohesive, intentional shade.

Step 5: Condition, Style & Reveal. Your hair is treated with a professional conditioner to restore moisture and softness, then blow-dried and styled so you can see your new highlights in all their dimensional glory. Your colorist will review the result from every angle and provide aftercare instructions to keep your highlights looking vibrant.

Highlights & Lowlights FAQs

What is the difference between full and partial highlights?

Full highlights place foils throughout the entire head for all-over brightness and an overall lighter appearance. Partial highlights focus on the top layers, crown, and face-framing sections only, adding brightness where it is most visible while leaving the lower layers darker for natural depth and contrast. Partial highlights are a great option for adding dimension without a dramatic change.

How often do highlights need to be touched up?

Most clients schedule highlight maintenance every eight to twelve weeks, though this varies based on the technique used and how much contrast exists between the highlights and the natural base. Partial highlights and babylights tend to grow out more softly and can be stretched longer, while full highlights with a higher contrast may need more frequent attention.

What are babylights?

Babylights are ultra-fine, delicate highlights that use very small sections of hair in each foil. The result mimics the natural, sun-kissed highlighting that children often have, creating a soft, luminous, incredibly natural-looking effect. Babylights are perfect for clients who want subtle dimension and shimmer without an obvious highlighted appearance.

Can I get highlights if my hair is already colored?

In many cases, yes. However, highlighting previously colored hair requires careful assessment by an experienced colorist, as the results can vary depending on what products and colors have been previously applied. During your consultation, we will evaluate your color history and hair condition to determine the best approach for achieving your desired result safely.

How do I prevent my highlights from turning brassy?

Brassiness in highlighted hair is caused by underlying warm pigments that become exposed during the lightening process. The best prevention strategy includes proper toning at the salon, using a purple or blue toning shampoo at home once a week, washing with cool water, minimizing heat styling, and protecting your hair from sun exposure. Regular toner refreshes between full highlight appointments also help keep brassiness at bay.

What are lowlights and who should get them?

Lowlights are strands of darker color woven throughout lighter hair to add depth, dimension, and richness. They are ideal for clients whose highlights have become too uniform or washed out over time, clients transitioning from a lighter shade back to a darker one, and anyone who wants a multi-dimensional look with both light and dark tones working together.

How long does a highlight appointment take?

Partial highlight appointments typically take one and a half to two hours, while full highlight appointments can take two to three hours. The total time depends on the density and length of your hair, the number of foils placed, and whether additional services like toning or a haircut are included.

Can highlights and lowlights be done in the same appointment?

Absolutely, and this is one of our most popular combination services. By weaving both lighter and darker strands throughout your hair in the same session, your colorist can create a rich, multi-dimensional effect that has depth at the root, brightness at the ends, and beautiful tonal variation throughout. The combined technique creates color that looks exceptionally natural and dynamic.

What is dimensional color?

Dimensional color refers to any technique that creates variation in tone throughout the hair, as opposed to a flat, single-shade result. This includes combinations of highlights and lowlights, balayage, babylights, and strategic toning. The goal of dimensional color is to create hair that looks multi-faceted, dynamic, and naturally complex, catching the light beautifully from every angle.

Do you offer toner touch-ups between highlight appointments?

Yes, and we highly recommend them. A standalone toner or gloss service between full highlight appointments can refresh your color, combat brassiness, and add beautiful shine, extending the overall life and beauty of your highlights. These services are quick, affordable, and make a significant difference in how your color looks between maintenance visits.

Aftercare Tips for Highlighted Hair

Keep your highlights looking salon-fresh with these professional aftercare tips:

  • Use sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner formulated for color-treated hair to prevent fading and maintain vibrancy.
  • Incorporate a purple or blue toning shampoo once a week to neutralize brassiness and keep your highlights cool and bright.
  • Wash with cool or lukewarm water to preserve the cuticle seal and prevent color from washing out prematurely.
  • Deep condition weekly to replenish moisture in lightened strands and maintain softness, shine, and elasticity.
  • Limit heat styling and always apply a heat protectant spray before blow-drying or using hot tools to prevent further damage to lightened hair.
  • Protect from sun and chlorine by wearing a hat or applying UV-protective spray when spending extended time outdoors, and rinse hair with clean water before and after swimming.
  • Book toner refreshes between appointments to keep your highlights looking polished and brass-free throughout your maintenance cycle.
